Exercise Georgiana 21st and 23rd May 2013

  • Exercise Georgiana is a simulated train crash taking place in Lincolnshire between 21st and 23rd May.
  • Involving over 300 members of Lincolnshire’s emergency services, Exercise Georgiana is one of the biggest training exercise ever held in the county.
  • It is important the emergency services are tested on working together in a major transport related emergency situation as it is one of a number of high level risks to the county. The East Coast Main Line runs through Lincolnshire so we need to be prepared for all eventualities.
  • The exercise is designed to help raise awareness of rail safety, showing that community safety is a priority for all participants, whilst also sharing knowledge and best practice with national partners.

Why is it called Exercise Georgiana?

  • The exercise is named after Georgiana Baguley, one of the victims of the
  • In 1906 the 8:45pm Scotch Express from King’s Cross hurtled through Grantham Station, left the rails and smashed through the parapet above Harlaxton Road. The Grantham Rail Crash claimed 14 lives. Georgiana Bagley (33) was the only one who could not be identified at the time. She was buried in Grantham Cemetery.

Waddington Exercise Site

  • Part of the exercise is being held at Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue's Waddington Training Facility, just off the A15, and will involve Lincolnshire Police, Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, East Midlands Ambulance Service, local authorities, the Environment Agency and health agencies along with voluntary and private agencies.
  • The exercise is intended to test the county's personnel and systems of contingencies in coping, containing and resolving a major incident.
  • Disruption to the public will be kept to a minimum. Drivers are likely to see an increase in volume of emergency vehicles in this area but there is no cause for alarm.
  • The exercise is expected to last two days and run between 8am and 9pm.

Claypole Village Hall

  • Claypole Village hall is being set up as a Survivor Reception Centre. Over 100 volunteers from the community are involved in the exercise role playing survivors from the train crash.
